How do I track and weigh my food waste?
Check out this document for details on how to track and weigh your food waste: Action Kit Instructions
What food items do I weigh?
Please weigh all food waste. This includes items you may not typically eat but were produced as part of the food such as peels, rinds, shells, bones. We want it all!
Both edible and non-edible food scraps should be included.
Do I put my weighed food in the garbage, or do I need to compost it?
If possible- yes!
From a sustainability lens, composting is a better way to dispose of food scraps/waste than the garbage. In Saint Paul and Ramsey County, there are multiple drop-off locations that accept food scraps—some are even open 24/7! Many residents have backyard compost bins which can accept most food scraps (no meat or dairy). But, of course, you can always throw food scraps in the trash if needed.

How often will I receive emails about the program?
We will send out two emails per week. One on Monday answering any FAQs in the survey and providing links to new material. Then, on Friday we'll send a reminder to report food waste by Sunday at midnight.
Which events do I need to register for?
You only need to register for the backyard composting 101 workshops. All you have to do is show up for the others!
Find the full list here: In-person Events | Food Too Good to Waste
How do I sign up for a workshop?
If you didn't select a workshop in the registration form, you will need to email Clare to sign up. Reach out to clare.pillsbury@ci.stpaul.mn.us.
What is a garden tool swap?
A garden tool swap is a free exchange of goods. Anyone from the community is welcome to give away items they no longer want and take any items that they're interested in. You don't need to bring an item to participate.
Accepted items: Gardening Tools; Gardening Books; Pots & Planters; Potting Soil; Bird Houses/Feeds; Lawn Ornaments; Etc.
Not Accepted: Electric or gas powered items; Items larger than five gallons
The events will take place at the same location as the workshops*. They will begin 30 minutes before and end 30 minutes after each compost workshop.
*The swap on July 30 will take place at Lily Pad Garden.
